She describes planting rice with her mother, Tran Thi Huyen: "I copied my mother's stance in the muddy water, planting my feet like a woman warrior. In When Heaven and Earth Changed Places Le Ly recalls her father, Phung Trong, telling her that her primary duties were to stay alive, to "find a husband and have babies and tell the story of what you've seen to your children and anyone else who'll listen." He also told her stories of the warrior women of Vietnam's history, Phung Thi Chinh and the sisters Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, who fought against Chinese invaders in the first century. The sixth child among the family's four girls and two boys, she was nicknamed "Bay Ut" (Vietnamese for "six"). ![]() Phung Thi Le Ly was born on 19 December 1949 on a rice farm in the village of Ky La (today Phoung Hoa Qui) near Da Nang. ![]()
